Former Shelton Official Convicted Of Embezzlement Released From Prison

SHELTON, Conn. -- Sharon Scanlon, the former Shelton official who stole nearly $1 million in taxpayer money has been released from the York Correctional Institution, serving only 24 months of a 54-month prison sentence after she pleaded guilty to first-degree larceny and forgery, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel.

Scanlon, 51, who served as the city's assistant finance director, will begin working to pay back restitution still outstanding in the case where officials said she stole $914,153.50 from the city between 2001 and 2012, the Valley Independent Sentinel reported. Scanlon said she has been working with a dog rescue program while in jail and hoped to work in that field, said the Valley Independent Sentinel.

The long-time former employee told the parole board that she was in debt when she began stealing the money and wasn't in her right mind, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel. Her salary at the time she resigned was $82,380. The city estimates they are still owed $250,000 after insurance, and from Scanlon's pension, added the Valley Independent Sentinel.
