As of Monday, Nov. 21, the average Nutmeg State driver will spend 3 cents less per gallon on gas to make that traditional trip over the river and through the wood to grandmother’s condo, er, house.

(That’s 3 cents less than last week, but 2 cents more than the same time last year.)

Nationally, average prices of $2.14 are also down 3 cents compared to last week, but a nickel higher compared to last year.

The lower prices are likely to spur more to hit the roads this holiday season.

Close to 50 million people are expected to travel over Thanksgiving and 89 percent of them will be driving.

By year’s end, industry experts contend, the national average for gas is expected to hover around $2 a gallon.

They attribute this to abundant crude oil supplies, dropping crude prices and an impending OPEC production agreement.

AAA’s weekly survey of prices in Connecticut's four regional areas found the following prices:

  • Greater Bridgeport/Stamford: $2.40.
  • Greater Hartford: $2.26.
  • New Haven/Meriden: $2.25.
  • New London/Norwich: $2.30.

The statewide average in Connecticut was $2.29. The state moved up one spot to 12th place from 13th as the highest in the nation.

The folks in Oklahoma can boost of the lowest average price at $1.85, followed by Missouri and Arkansas, which were both at $1.90 a gallon.

Hawaii continues to lead the pack with highest prices in the nation at $2.86, followed by California at $2.70.
