SHELTON, Conn. – Two towns on opposite sides of the Housatonic River celebrated the Fourth of July as they always do — together.

On Sunday, the Derby Shelton fireworks show lit up the sky to the delight of the crowds along the Riverwalk. The show had been postponed Friday evening due to rain and the threat of tornadoes.

The evening kicked off in style with a concert by the Connecticut Symphonic Orchestra that featured music from such iconic films as "E.T" and "Star Wars." When the fireworks began, the orchestra struck up with patriotic tunes to highlight the night's theme.

Throughout the evening, food trucks sold treats to the crowds, dishing up kettle corn, lemonade, ice cream, cotton candy, desserts and doughnuts, pizza, and more.

Mayor Mark Lauretti of Shelton was in the crowd, greeting residents and wishing them a Happy Fourth. “It was nice to see everyone come out and have a good time,” Lauretti said.

Michael Dokla, a resident of Shelton, was talking with Lauretti and was excited to see the fireworks.

“It's always nice to see Mark. He’s making his rounds to go see people and say hello,” Dokla said.

At the end, both towns compete with their grand finales, blasting off fireworks to dazzle the spectators.

“This was my first time seeing these fireworks, and they were really something special. It was just exciting to see fireworks coming from two different directions as I sat right in between them at the boardwalk,” said Nicholas Zappone, a resident of Prospect. “It was like having fireworks in stereo! Quite the unexpected bonus!”
