What constitutes a “hole-in-the-wall” joint? It’s essentially an establishment that serves up spectacular food in a tiny, unassuming and/or inconspicuous storefront. The best hole-in-the-wall restaurants also have a unique atmosphere and authentic flair.

Danny’s Drive-In, located off of I-95 on Ferry Boulevard in Stratford, has been around since 1935 and ranks at number 13 on the list. Dishing out classic American staples like hot dogs, burgers milkshakes and more, Danny’s knows how to keep it simple yet incredibly flavorful.

"Danny’s has been serving its deep-fried hot dogs for 83 years, starting its 9-inch Hummel Bros. franks on the griddle and then crisping them up with a trip to the hot oil. The buns are nicely toasted, and the house specialty is the Bull Dog, topped with fried onions and a locally renowned super-spicy sauce called Kuhn’s Chili," writes Dan Myers.

The eatery has earned 4.5/5 stars on Facebook with consistently positive feedback regarding food quality and service.

“Great staff and friendly atmosphere,” wrote Dave D. in an April 14 Facebook review.

Other Connecticut eateries that made the list include Dottie's Diner in Woodbury, Louis' Lunch in New Haven and Ted's in Meriden. To view The Daily Meal’s full list of the country’s top hole-in-the-wall restaurants, click here
