More superheroes are likely to take part in the Wesley Village Halloween 5K & Fun Walk on Saturday, Oct. 29, in Shelton.The event, which drew 300 its first year in 2013, is expected to have 400, said John Bysiewicz of JB Sports, the event organizer.
The race dubbed one "for all generations" attracts kids to people in their 70s and older. Both groups (kids who live in Shelton) can register for free.
There is a course for everybody at any level, Bysiewicz said.
A one-mile walk and 5K run goes up and down Long Hill Road, while a half-mile Kids Fun Run courses through Wesley Village property. The 5K is a flat out-and-back course.
Many participants wear costumes, but Bysiewicz couldn't remember details because his focus race days are on safety, he said. "I'm watching the traffic and making sure the cones are where they should be, so I don't remember specifically."
His assistant Jody Damsky, who had pictures, said, "It's so much fun to see the people in costumes. What's nice, too, is the residents also dress up. They are members of the community (Wesley Village) they serve."
There are even awards for best costumes, she noted.
"It's a community event that raises money for (people with ) Alzheimer's. Wesley Village does a great job with it. They have a bounce house every year and sandwiches and pastries. Their staff cooks a complete breakfast for after the race," Bysiewicz said.
Activities include face-painting, a clown and trick-or-treating. Costumes are encouraged. The first 300 5K entrants will receive a tech T-shirt. Cotton T-shirts will be given to all other event participants.
Race proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association and life-enriching and award-winning programs for seniors at the Wesley Village senior living campus.
The campus provides independent living, assisted living, memory care, short-term rehabilitation, outpatient therapy and fitness services, and skilled nursing care at its communities, including at Wesley Heights in Stratford.
