Running just two days after the death of last year’s captain, Carey Depuy, the Tigers beat Wilton, New Canaan and St. Joseph in a race at Trumbull. They shut out New Canaan, 15-43, and St. Joseph, 15-50 -- placing their top five runners ahead of the first runner for the other team -- and outran rival border rival Wilton, 21-36.
Wilton’s Mary Lynch won the race on the 5k course, but a parade of orange and black followed her. Julia Hergenrother, a sophomore, finished second followed by Ava Kelley, Olivia Gorski and Rachel Maue. Kelsey Bordash finished seventh.
Hergenrother and Kelley, a junior, flew around the 3.1 mile course in 19:24, six seconds behind Lynch.
Ridgefield ran with heavy hearts in remembrance of Depuy, who died in a plane crash on Sunday in upstate New York. Depuy and Ryan Adams, also of Ridgefield, died in the crash. Depuy was the plane’s pilot. Depuy was also a mentor and leader for many of the girls on the team.
The team dedicated the race to their former teammate. They also pained the word "Carey" on their right cheeks and "2015" on their left.
Ridgefield improved to 6-0 on the season with the sweep. The Tigers came into the season ranked No.3 in the state coaches poll. They are tied with Staples at No. 3 in the latest rankings. The Wreckers lost to Greenwich on Tuesday, 25-30. Senior Hannah DeBalsi, one of the top runners in the country, did not run for Staples. Ridgefield meets Staples on Oct. 13 in Westport.
Ridgefield’s next meet is Tuesday at Danbury along with Bridgeport Central and Stamford.
