The crash near Exit 22 on northbound I-95 was reported at about 6:29 a.m. Sunday. When firefighters arrived on the scene at 6:34 a.m., they found a "very serious multi-vehicle accident: a car was under a trailer truck, the car was on fire, and one occupant was entrapped in the vehicle," Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood said in a statement.
WFSB-TV identified the driver as Yvonne Sokol, 27, of Bridgeport. She was driving at a high rate of speed, swerving in and out of the left and center lane and hit the truck, State Police told WFSB.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by an AMR paramedic, WFSB said.
The driver was extricated from the wreckage using multiple hydraulic rescue tools, Sherwood said. Firefighters quickly gained access to the car and determined the woman who was driving had no pulse, he said. The fire department initiated an operation to lift the trailer off of the car, Sherwood said.
A heavy duty wrecker from Buds Towing was called to the scene to assist in lifting the trailer off the car, he said. At least 24 emergency response personnel helped to extricate the driver from the wreckage, Sherwood said.
Fire Chief Richard Felner was on the scene during the entire operation and working as a liaison with the State Police.
The Fairfield Fire Department remained on the scene until 8:30 a.m. The State Police stayed to complete its investigation of the crash.
Sherwood assumed command of the incident. Fairfield Fire Department Engine 1, Ladder 1, Engine 2, Ladder 2, and Car 3 responded as did Company 1 and Car 3all responded to the crash.
Westport Fire Department and Fairfield Engine 4 were requested to the scene for assistance with the extrication. American Medical Response arrived shortly after the fire department.
