RIDGEFIELD, Conn. John Carroll Hinson of Ridgefield and Brewster, Mass., died June 30. He was 81.
He was born May 10, 1931, in Hartsdale, N.Y., to Jay and Lucile Hinson. He attended Hartsdale public schools and graduated from the Maritime College of the State University of New York at Fort Schuyler, N.Y., as an ensign. Hinson sailed the world three times as a merchant marine and later as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Hinson was a navigator and taught several would-be sailors his art at Cape Cod in later life. He and his wife, June Flood Hinson, lived in Ridgefield. They built several homes, as Hinson was a self-taught carpenter.
The family moved to Cape Cod, where Hinson remained until this year when he moved to the Danbury area.
Hinson is survived by his wife; two sons, John P. (Nancy) Hinson, of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Scott Hinson, of New Milford, Conn.; two sisters, June Tschauder, of Southbury, Conn., and Jacqulin Fincham, of Topeka, Kan.; a brother, Jay Hinson, of Machias, Minn.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial celebration was held on Candlewood Lake. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Kane Funeral Home in Ridgefield handled arrangements.
