Two New Flu Deaths Reported In Connecticut

Two flu-related deaths were reported in the first week of the year, along with the news of the illness being widespread across the state.

According to a report from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the two new deaths bring the number this flu season to a total of six.

Of the six deaths, four were people over 65-years-old, one between 50-years-old and 64-years-old and one between 25-years-old and 49-years-old, the report said.

A total of 1,039 influenza positive laboratory tests have been reported during the current season, beginning August 26, 2018, through Jan. 5 with 172 cases reported in Fairfield County, the report said.

“Influenza activity has rapidly increased in Connecticut during the past several weeks,” Thursday’s report said.

Despite the increase, the number of emergency room visits statewide for flu-like symptoms was down from 10.8 percent to 10.4 percent.

Department officials said there is still time for you and your family to obtain your flu vaccine and take steps to prevent influenza-related illness and hospitalization.
