A man wanted in connection with the alleged killing of a Fairfield County woman was nabbed at the Canadian border and is expected to be charged with her death in the coming days.

Jennifer Brelsford, 40, was found dead inside her Goddard Avenue home in Bridgeport on Sunday, Oct. 18, by police performing a welfare check.

Her body had obvious signs of trauma, said Bridgeport Police Captain Brian Fitzgerald.

Detectives quickly identified Brelsford's estranged boyfriend, Corey Ramos, 30, as a suspect, and began a search for his whereabouts.

"Detectives worked with law enforcement in Connecticut and Vermont to track the whereabouts of Ramos, and we learned that he crossed into the State of Vermont yesterday after Brelsford was killed," Fitzgerald said.

Detectives then alerted law enforcement in New England and New York to be on the lookout for Ramos.

On Monday, Oct. 19, Ramos attempted to illegally cross the northern border from Vermont, into Canada. U.S. Border Agents, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police worked together to detain Ramos over the border in Canada, Fitzgerald said.

Ramos was transferred back into the custody of U.S. law enforcement and is being held by the Vermont State Police, charged as a fugitive from justice based on a felony warrant issued Monday in Connecticut that charges Ramos with two counts of violating a protective order.

It is anticipated that Ramos will be charged with the murder of Brelsford in the coming days, and will be extradited back to Connecticut to await trial, Fitzgerald added.
