According to the state Department of Public Health weekly report, the flu remains widespread across the state, with two new deaths reported for the week.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recent reports on the percentage of people nationally seeing their health care provider with influenza-like-illness is 3.5 percent above the national baseline of 2.2 percent, the report said.

Currently, there are a total of 1,248 influenza cases reported statewide with 183 cases reported in Fairfield County. Other counties reporting included Hartford County with 381 cases; New Haven with 383 cases; Middlesex with 80 cases; New London with 65 cases, and Litchfield with 45.

The number of people hospitalized climbed as well, from 377 to 433, the report shows.

Of the eight people who have died from flu-associated illness this flu season, five were 65 and older and two were aged 50 to 64. One was between the ages of 25 to 49.

Officials said there is still time to receive a flu vaccine to help mitigate the effects or severeness of the illness.
