A (Firetruck) Visit from St. Nicholas, Redux by Jennifer Ponte Canning
’Twas middle November, and all through the town, youngsters were starting the Christmas countdown. Halloween had already gone with a howl; soon it would be time for the Thanksgiving fowl. Everyone knew, once the dishes were cleared, it was only a twinkling ’til Santa appeared.
As the children lay nestled all snug in their beds while visions of Rainbow Looms danced in their heads, mamas and papas were faced with a question: stick with routine, or make an impression? The decision was easy, but they had to move quick— the Fire Department would deliver St. Nick!
Posters in Ridgefield gave the full scoop: it was a fund-raiser by the pro firemen’s group. For a donation to those who were down on their luck, Santa would visit one’s house on a truck! Parents could choose a date and a time, then drop gifts for their kids before the deadline.
The deadline was coming — alas, it loomed near! Registration would close early this year! Away to computers parents flew in a streak, to register online before Friday next week. Over the keyboard those fingers took flight, securing a spot through the union’s website.
The thought then warmed their hearts like an ember: a moment their children would always remember! Aglow with warm fuzzies amid winter’s chill, these parents look forward to spreading the thrill. You can hear them exclaim to all those they meet, “Remember to register by November 15th!”

IAFF Local 1739 represents the professional firefighters who protect the citizens and guests of Ridgefield, Conn. Always at the firehouse when an emergency call comes in, these full-time firefighters work 24-hour shifts. Each shift employs at least two paramedics, and every firefighter is trained as an EMT.
