Cousins Help Girls Globally By Selling Cupcakes in Ridgefield

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – Two 20-year-old cousins who had never met before did a great job of teaming up to raise nearly $200 for charity by selling cupcakes on Ridgefield’s Main Street on Tuesday.

Becca Wertheim from North Carolina and Davina Gutermuth from Germany set up shop outside their aunt’s office at Fairfield County Bank Insurance Services to raise money for She’s the First, a nonprofit organization that Wertheim is involved with at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Wertheim started a chapter of She’s the First at UNC-Asheville last September. The cupcake sale has become a “signature event” for the group after about $30,000 was raised that way last year, she said.

“We’re taking girls off the street,” Wertheim said. “We stay in contact with them from kindergarten through high school graduation.” The group’s goal is to assist girls in developing countries to become educated and in many cases to be the “first person in their family to graduate high school,” she said.

They are just $100 short of being able to sponsor a girl for a full year. The money goes directly to supporting the sponsored girl, Wertheim said. The nonprofit keeps in contact with its partner schools to ensure the money is properly spent.

“We made a lot more than I thought we would,” said Wertheim, who was expecting closer to $100. “I wanted to do the bake sale today because I thought it would be the perfect way to spread the word about She's the First while vacationing in Ridgefield.”

For Gutermuth, it’s a cause she just found out about when meeting her cousin, but she said, “Maybe I’ll bring it to Germany!”
