RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- The thrill of Grand Prix competition will roar onto the big screen of The Ridgefield Playhouse in HD on Thursday, March 12, at 7 p.m., when the Academy Award-winning classic American action film "Grand Prix" is screened.
The doors open at 6:30 p.m. One of the 10 highest grossing films of 1966, Grand Prix won three Academy Awards for its technical achievements.
Special guest speaker for the "Grand Prix" film event is British motorsport expert Simon Kirkby. This event is sponsored by Jeff McAllister, No. 109 Cheese & Wine, Caffeine and Carburetors, and The Lime Rock Drivers Club and is part of The Lime Rock Drivers Club Film Series.
“Low and behold, a mini-movie series was created,” said executive director Allison Stockel. “Now, in addition to screening 'Grand Prix' on March 12, The Lime Rock Drivers Club Film Series will also show 'Le Mans' on May 28 and 'Senna' on July 16. Because Jeff and Lime Rock are helping to defer the costs of staffing and publicity for the events, we are able to offer driving buffs the opportunity to see these films for a mere suggested donation.
"In addition to seeing the old films on the big screen once again, there will be fun things going on in the lobby as well as driving themed food at concession plus a full bar.”
Film-goers will be able to hear how it all went down directly from Kirkby, who started rally and “grass track” competitions in 1966, both extremely popular forms of racing in his native England. Since then, he has been test driver for Reynard Race Cars and won the British Touring Car Championship for both Alfa Romeo and Chrysler U.K. as a factory driver as well as dozens of open-wheel races in FF2000, SuperVee, Formula Continental and F3.
For tickets, a $15 donation at the door supports nonprofit Playhouse shows. Visit ridgefieldplayhouse.org, or call the box office at 203-438-5795 for more information.
