FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for late Thursday afternoon in Fairfield County and Westchester County, the National Weather Service said.
The warning is in effect until 6:15 p.m. Thursday.
At 5:08 p.m., the weather service Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.
The storm was located near Yorktown Heights and Mahopac, N.Y., and moving northeast at 20 mph.
The warning especially includes the Danbury area. Damaging winds were reported in the Hudson Valley from the storm.
Residents are urged to seek shelter away from windows as the storm approaches.
