TPT Engravers suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of RK's Landscaping, which prevailed 6-3 in extra innings during a recent showdown between the top two teams in the Norwalk Cal Ripken Minor Division. TPT's record is now 12-1, while second-place RK's improved to 12-2 with only a week left in the regular season.
Hugh Clyne led RK's offense with two doubles and three RBIs. Clyne, Johnny Thorme and Mike Claps combined to strike out 12 batters over seven innings.
TPT pitchers Chris Druin, Brendan Quinlan-Huertas and Chris van der Els were equally strong, striking out 15 batters during the contest. Quinlan-Huertas and Druin also each had two hits for TPT, with Druin knocking in the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the score at 3-3 and send the game into extra innings.
RK's took the lead in the seventh inning on the strength of a two-run double by Clyne, and Claps shut down the TPT offense during the extra frame to record the victory.
Other Minor Division Results
The Original Swanky Franks 6, Furst Properties 2: Andrew Devigne tripled and scored the tying run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Kyle Woodring broke the game open with a grand slam for Swanky Franks. Woodring also closed the game by pitching a scoreless sixth inning. Ronnie Visciglia and Matthew Saint-Louis had RBI hits, and Brendan Farrell made an outstanding catch for Furst Properties.
RK's Landscaping 10, The Original Swanky Franks 0: Hugh Clyne led RK's offense with two hits and two RBI, and Randy Mateo smacked a triple. Swanky Franks' Danny Robillard, Chris Veneruso and Kyle Woodring all reached base in the fourth inning, but were unable to score as RK's Clyne, James Stephanowicz and Johnny Thorme combined to toss a no-hit shutout.
Furst Properties 7, Shining Stars Daycare 1: Furst Properties' offense was led by multiple hits from Joey Sepuca, Jake Buffardi and Ryan D'Amico. On the mound, Andrew Matthews struck out nine, allowing no hits in three innings of work for Furst. For the Shining Stars, John David Dufort and Peter Neglia combined to strike out seven, and Stephen Pare had an outstanding game behind the plate.
The Original Swanky Franks 6, Sono Energy 3:Swanky Franks' Patrick Auz pitched three strong innings, striking out five batters and yielding only one run. Jordan O'Brien led the Swanky Franks offense by hitting a two-run single. For Sono, Anthony Socci pitched three innings, striking out five, and shortstop Jake Dumas made an outstanding catch of a line drive.
Major Division Results
New Canaan Reds 9, the Batter's Box 1: Justin Clark homered, Zach Smith went four for four and Caleb Hemmers added two hits as the Reds scored eight times in the first two innings. Matt Galyas walked, singled twice and collected the lone RBI for The Batter's Box.
Stepping Stones Marble & Granite 4, New Canaan Indians 2: Alex Spada, Will Freebairn, Jeff Vititoe made outstanding defensive plays, and Mike Gonzalez pitched a complete game two-hitter to lead Stepping Stones.
