NORWALK, Conn. Young ballplayers in the Norwalk's Cranbury baseball program eager to start the season have been preparing on Tuesday nights at the local elementary school.
Players ages 5-12 in four age groups practice throwing, fielding and learning the game with coaches at Cranbury Elementary School. The clinics are a new initiative by the league and incoming president Richard Clemens.
The next clinic is scheduled for March 6. Players in the Shetland (ages 5-6) and Pinto (ages 7-8) divisions practice from 6-7:15 p.m. Players in the Mustang (9-10) and Bronco (11-12) divisions practice at 7:15. The clinics are free for registered players.
Players can still register. The deadline for online discounts is Feb. 29. Tryouts are scheduled for Mustang and Bronco league players on March 27. Players can register at the clinics. Players as young as 4-years-old can also register. Players in the Shetland and Pinto age groups will not have tryouts and will be placed on teams.
Opening day is scheduled for April 14 at Tim Devine Field, where State Sen. Bob Duff is scheduled to throw out the first pitch. Cranbury is starting its 52nd season, and its most famous alumnus is former major leaguer Mo Vaughn. The league is open to players in Norwalk and surrounding communities.
