NORWALK, Conn. -- The eighth Annual Autumn Classic Tennis Tournament was held Sept. 26 in benefit of Norwalk Grassroots Tennis.
“Its a great day of tennis for area high school players, and all of the participants feel so strongly about helping to raise money for such a worthy cause and feel fortunate doing so by playing a sport they love,” said Will Andrews of Staples High School.
Varsity and junior varsity athletes from the area competed in doubles play at the Weston Field Club, Weston Racquet Club and Longshore Park.
NGT benefits more than 250 Norwalk youth living in public or subsidized housing. The nonprofit organization provides professional tennis instruction as well as supplementary education services and life skills programming.
“Not only do these high school tennis players support NGT but they give their time as youth tennis coaches and academic tutors that allow us to help so many underprivileged youth realize their potential in Norwalk,” said tournament coordinator Allen Levenson.
Olivia Coyle from Greenwich Academy and Maitlyn Murphy from Greenwich High School also co-chaired the event.
The event raised more than $10,000 to help continue NGT programs.
