Norwalk Falls Short In 9-10 Baseball Semifinal

NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk 9-10-year-old Little League All-Stars were one strike away from a mercy-rule loss to Wilton in the District One semifinal before almost battling back to win.

Jack Fitzpatrick crushed a full-count three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to keep Norwalk’s hopes alive. Norwalk got the tying run on second and brought the winning run to the plate, but the comeback fell short there as Wilton survived a wild 20-19 semifinal.

Norwalk battled back all evening, starting from a 7-1 deficit in the second inning. The Norwalk 9-10’s sent 10 players to the plate in the third, scoring six times to take a 10-9 lead. Jack Matthews had a two-run double in the inning and Michael Boyian drove in a pair with a single.

But Wilton dealt the biggest blow in the top of the fourth, sending 12 players to the plate and scoring nine times. The lead ballooned to 20-10 after 4½ innings.

The game would have ended in the fifth on the 10-run mercy rule, but Fitzpatrick’s three-run jack kept Norwalk alive. Wilton reliever Richard Nolan was finally able to snuff out the Norwalk rally.

Matthews finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs, while Fitzpatrick went 2-for-5 with four RBIs. Kyle Gordon also had a big night, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
