In a letter to parents this week, the Westport Board of Education announced that Palmer plans to retire from the district, effective on Aug. 1, just two years after she left the Weston School District to take over in Westport.

The announcement comes weeks after it was announced that Coleytown Middle School will likely not open before January 2020 due to ongoing mold issues. It also comes as area parents have been vociferously protesting a proposed potential school district consolidation that could impact Fairfield County schools. A Westport father even launched a change.org petition, rallying the community as he attempts to prevent the school district from creating what he dubbed a “monster school.”

No cause for the sudden resignation has been announced. The Board of Education is expected to begin forming a search committee to search for Palmer's successor as soon as next week.
