Norwalk High School students woke up early on Saturday morning to help out at their school's 11th Annual Campus Clean Up. "There is such a community feeling today," says Ryan Tougher, a senior. "Everyone is helping out for one cause. It's not really work, its fun."
By mid-morning, 200 kids were picking up garbage, weeding, mulching and planting to get their campus ready for graduation next month. Several facutly members, including Prinicipal Leonard Mecca were also there with work gloves on hand.
Campus Clean Up was started by Kyle Seaburg and Pat O'Shaughnessy, NHS social studies teachers. Back in 1999, they remember seeing then principal Amos Dewey spreading mulch in a suit on the morning of graduation. "We decided then, that we need to help out," said Seaburg. "The event has been growing and growing every year." The student government sponsors the event and obtains donations from parents, community members and local businesses like L & L Evergreen and Stew Leonard's.
Seaburg says that as part of the Clean-Up, the school plants cedar trees alongside the entrance in honor of NHS students who died while serving in the armed forces. The students also planted daylilies, expecting they will be in full bloom by graduation.
