Jakub Nowicki's biggest surprise when he arrived at Boston College in the fall was the amount of free time he had on his hands. "There was no separation between home and school, he said. Everything was 10 minutes away. I've had to focus on time management."
And coming from a suburban area, he also had to get used to campus life in a city. There are just so many people around all the time."
Nowicki was one of 25 college freshmen home for winter break who visited Norwalk High School, their alma mater, on Wednesday morning. They shared their new-found wisdom on college life with high school seniors, who had a slew of questions about roommates, parties, class sizes, study habits, getting enough sleep, dorm food, showers and homesickness.
Nowicki remembered how overwhelming senior year was for him last year. When I was going through college admission, it helped me to talk to people about their experiences. Especially because I am the first in my family to attend college here. Nowickis parents are immigrants from Poland.
The guidance department organized a morning breakfast for the returning college freshmen. Afterwards, breakout sessions were held about different topics: social life, self-advocacy, support and academic success. Over 100 high school seniors participated in the discussions.
It sounds like each college is so different, said Kayla Smoragiewiez, a senior. Its great to be able to talk to them like this, especially because I know a lot of them from last year. We get to hear about the college experience from people like us who are going through it right now.
