NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Board of Education and the Norwalk Federation of Teachers have reached a tentative agreement that will transition teachers to a new healthcare plan and avoid layoffs.

The agreement will transition NFT members to the CT 2.0 Healthcare Plan and includes a one-year contract extension into the 2019-20 school year. The contract extension comes with a salary increase of 2.65 percent, in addition to the modification of work rules, according to the district.

The agreement restores kindergarten aide positions, as well as middle school music teachers to the 2017-18 budget, and avoids layoffs of personnel.

The Board of Education will vote on the 2017-18 budget at its Tuesday, June 27 meeting, with a tentative date for ratification by teachers set for Sept. 5. Both the Board of Education and the NFT expressed gratitude to Mayor Harry Rilling for facilitating the agreement.
