Days Off Now Means More School Later

Norwalk parents and students can expect an extra six days of school to make up for the days that have been missed this year, says Interim School Superintendent Michael Nast. Before the recent storm, schools had closed for snow days only twice, although there were several delayed openings. Since last weekend, however, students have lost five additional days.

Under Connecticut state law, students have to be in school for 181 days. Norwalk had scheduled 182 days of classes--one more than needed. With the schools closed again today, six days will have to be made up. Gov. Jodi Rell has the power to make an exception, but Nast considers that unlikely.

Six extra days isn't necessarily the final figure. Late March and early April might also bring school-shutting storms.

Nast is tracking CL&P's repair schedule closely. He also speaks regularly with the city’s Public Works Department, the school bus company and neighboring superintendents. The interim Chief Financial Officer Dan Cook keeps in touch with the schools’ food service company to be sure lunch would be available if the schools reopen. "My primary concern is for the kids. safety,” Nast said.  “There are still live wires hanging and children shouldn't be near them."

Despite the loss of school days, April break is still on, Nast said. There is not enough time for parents to change plans that they have made.
