4 Fairfield County High Schools Ranked Among Best In The Nation By Newsweek

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Fifteen Connecticut high schools -- including four in Fairfield County -- have been ranked among the Top 500 in the nation by Newsweek in its annual report.

Schools are ranked using both achievement information, such as standardized test results, and also "college readiness indicators," including the number of counselors, SAT and ACT participation and performance, and advanced classes participation and performance, Newsweek said.

Fairfield County's top-ranked schools are Weston High, Wilton High, Ridgefield High and Newtown High.

Weston High came in at No. 39 nationally and was the top high school in Connecticut -- as it was last year, as well, though its ranking was lower, at 47.

This year, the analysis of Weston High found a 99.4 percent graduation rate, that 98.2 of its students were college-bound and its college readiness score was 87.5 percent.

Wilton High School was ranked 56th in the nation. Its graduation rate was 99.1 percent, 95 percent were heading to college and college readiness was assessed at 85.3 percent.

Ridgefield High School came in at No. 151 nationally. It had a 98.2 percent graduation rate, with 90.1 percent of its students college-bound. Its college readiness score was 80.6 percent.

The final Fairfield County school is Newtown High, which was ranked 339th in the nation. It has a 96.3 percent graduation rate, 92 percent were off to higher ed and it had a 76.2 college readiness score.

The other Connecticut schools were:

  • Avon High School, at 116th;
  • East Lyme High School, at 224th;
  • Haddam-Killingworth High School in Higganum, at 267th;
  • Farmington High School, at 286th;
  • Pomperaug High School in Southbury, at 325th;
  • South Windsor High School, at 348th;
  • Litchfield High School, at 364th;
  • Cheshire High School, at 371st;
  • East Hampton High School 384th;
  • Valley Regional High School in Deep River, at 389th; and
  • Woodstock Academy, at 407th.

The Top 10 schools in the country are:

  • Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, in Alexandria, Va.;
  • Academy for Math, Science and Engineering, in Rockaway, N.J.;
  • Stuyvesant High School, in New York City;
  • Union County Magnet High School, in Scotch Plains, N.J.;
  • the Early College at Guilford, in Greensboro, N.C.;
  • Stanton College Preparatory School, in Jacksonville, Fla.;
  • Whitney (Gretchen) High School, in Cerritos, Calif.;
  • Northside College Preparatory High School, in Chicago;
  • North Oldham High School, in Goshen, Ky.; and
  • Middlesex City Academy for Science, Math & Engineering Technologies, in Edison, N.J.
