NORWALK, Conn. – James Bloom of Norwalk, a member of a longtime oystering family, was appointed to the new Connecticut Aquaculture Advisory Council by State Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk, Darien).

The Council, created this year by the General Assembly, marks the beginning of a cooperative effort by the state and shellfish industry, and is tasked with responsibly growing and promoting the industry.

“For more than three generations the Bloom family has been in the shell fishing business,” said Duff who helped write and championed the legislation. “James will provide firsthand industry experience that will benefit the Aquaculture Advisory Council.”

Since the 1940s Norm Bloom and Son, a family-owned farm that has been caring for, farming, and harvesting Copps Island oysters, clams and lobsters. The Council will recommend procedures to make available maps with the names of shellfish bed leaseholders and review health and safety standards related to the state’s popular shellfish industry.

“As a shell fisherman whose family has been farming shellfish along Connecticut’s shoreline for generations, I am looking forward to working collaboratively with the members of the Shellfish Advisory Panel to assist in the creation of policies aimed at the long-term sustainability of the shellfish industry in Connecticut,” said Bloom.
