NORWALK, Conn. – A worker who fell 30 feet into a maintenance pit on the Stroffolino Bridge on Saturday morning was rescued by Norwalk firefighters, a fire official reported.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation worker was in extreme pain with a serious leg injury and possible neck and back injuries, the fire department reported.
Firefighters monitored the pit for oxygen levels and toxic gases, then entered to assist the worker who was medicated, strapped to a board, collared and secured in a rescue basket, the fire department said.
The man was then carried up 15 feet of stairs to the bridge surface, where paramedics transported him to Norwalk Hospital.
As the rescue was taking place, police reduced traffic on the bridge to one lane. Twenty firefighters responded and cleared the scene by 10 a.m.
