A member of the Coast Guard Reserves, Ferullo was recalled to active duty in March and has been out on leave from the police department since then. Because he is away on duty, he announced his resignation to the Weston Police Department in a letter dated July 9.

“I was advised by the U.S. Coast Guard that I will be receiving another set of military orders for the period of Oct. 1, 2015 through Sept. 30, 2016. As such, please allow this letter to serve as my official notification of my intent to retire from the Weston Police Department as of Oct. 8, 2015. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the town of Weston and to work alongside you and the other members of the department,” he wrote.

“Mike, it has been an honor and a true pleasure working with you over the past 30+ years here in Weston. You are a true professional in every sense of the word, always going above and beyond the call of duty with every task and assignment that you have taken on. Your dedication to service as a police officer in Weston has never gone unnoticed and you will leave a huge void that is going to be difficult to fill," Weston Police Chief John Troxell, who has worked with Ferullo on Weston’s police force for more than three decades, responded in a letter.

Ferullo is a commander in the Coast Guard Reserves, and has been a member of the Weston Police Department since 1982.

He was first recalled to active duty on Sept. 11, 2001, following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. In 2002, his Coast Guard unit was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, and in 2003 he was deployed to Rota, Spain, as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Ferullo has been honored by the Coast Guard with a large number of medals for meritorious service.
