The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a multi-car accident on the Route 7 connector southbound between exits 1 and 2 at around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, fire officials found a Honda Pilot SUV that had gone over a guardrail and was located 60 feet off the highway and down a 50-foot embankment.

The car had rolled several times on the highway and landed front end down with the rear end wedged against a tree at the edge of the Norwalk River, fire officials said. Two people were trapped inside.

Multiple fire companies responded and crews went to work setting up rigging and tools to extricate the two occupants. They were quickly freed and taken to Norwalk Hospital with life-threatening injuries, fire officials said.

There were three or four other cars involved in the accident, and one person required medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the fire department.

An Eversource utility truck that came upon the scene assisted firefighters with securing the SUV to a tree so crews could assess the situation. Norwalk police officers and an off-duty dispatcher who witnessed the accident also assisted.
