The safety initiative, called Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), will include several vehicle checkpoints with additional state troopers along Connecticut roads and highways.
Beginning Wednesday evening in Fairfield County, patrols will be stationed along Interstate 95 between Stamford and New Haven, and along routes 8 and 25 in Bridgeport, Trumbull and Shelton.
The added patrols, many of which will be in the department’s non-traditional cars, will remain stationed in those areas through Saturday.
“Thanksgiving eve and day are without any doubt the busiest traffic days of the year,” state police officials said in a statement. “Motorists need to remember, don’t follow too close, slow down, stay off your cell phone and if you drink then don’t drive.”
During the Thanksgiving holiday in 2011, state police arrested 65 people on a charge of driving under the influence, according to officials.
Additionally, troopers investigated 389 car accidents, 50 of which involved injuries and two ended in fatalities. Troopers also issued 1,376 speeding tickets, 417 failure to wear seat belt citations and 2,745 hazardous moving violations.
