The incident took place around 1:47 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 2, when the New Canaan Police were dispatched to the 400 block of Ponus Ridge Road on a report of an erratic operator, said Lt. Jason Ferraro.

Responding units observed a light-colored minivan stopped on Ponus Ridge Road with the operator initially unresponsive in the driver's seat, Ferraro said.

After the driver became responsive he drove away from the officers on scene.

The vehicle subsequently drove off the road and over a stone wall, down an embankment, and came to rest after impacting a utility pole. At that time the car ignited into flames, Ferraro said.

The driver was removed from the vehicle by rescue personnel.

They were then transported to the Norwalk emergency room for an evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries.

At this time the crash is under investigation.
