NORWALK, Conn. A Norwalk woman suffered serious injuries early Saturday when her car tumbled down an embankment along Interstate 95 after sliding along the guard rail, Norwalk firefighters say.
It took firefighters 20 minutes to get the woman out of the car, as the roof was crushed down to the front seat, pinning her between the front seat and the dashboard. The driver, who firefighters estimated to be in her 30's, was semi-conscious when extricated and transported to Norwalk Hospital by paramedics. She was the only one in the car.
The single-car accident happened at about 1:45 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway between exits 13 and 14, according to Dep. Chief Ed Prescott. The car, a Nissan Murano, slid along the guard rail for approximately 200 feet before jumping the guardrail and traveling down an embankment 40 feet, coming to rest in heavy brush.
A car traveling south hit the Jersey barrier while firefighters were onscene, possibly due to a mechanical malfunction. Prescott said that the five people in the Fiat were uninjured.
There were 12 firefighters on the scene, with an engine, truck and a rescue and command car. All fire companies cleared the highway by 3:15 a.m.
