NORWALK, Conn. -- A man in his 30s was jumped by two men, one of whom was carrying a handgun that he used to smash the victim in the mouth during an armed robbery late Thursday, Norwalk Police said.

Norwalk Hospital called police at about midnight after discovering what had happened to the man. The victim said he had been walking home in the area of Chestnut and Monroe streets near the police headquarters when a man with a handgun jumped out of a hiding area and confronted him, police said.

The victim refused to give anything to the robber but he was attacked by a second man from behind, police said. During the brief struggle, the man was hit in the mouth with the handgun, police said, and robbed of his wallet, which contained some cash and identification cards. His phone was smashed during the robbery, police said.

The man suffered minor injuries. Police said the two suspects are described as black males.
