An officer on patrol pulled over a car for having illegally tinted windows, a leaking exhaust and improperly colored tail lights near the intersection of Flax Hill Road and Taylor Avenue on Wednesday evening, according to police reports. Denzel Weldon, 22, of Orchard Street was driving the car at the time and gave officers permission to search the car, police said.
Officers found a loaded 9mm handgun in the trunk, according to police reports. The weapon had not been reported stolen, but Weldon told officers that the gun did not belong to him, police said. Investigators were not able to contact the gun’s registered owner to determine whether it was lost or stolen, police said.
Weldon was arrested and charged with theft of a firearm, carrying a gun without a permit and having weapons in a motor vehicle. He was also issued tickets for the motor vehicle charges. He was held on $50,000 bond, and is due in court on Oct. 4.
