While the storm may only bring a few inches of snow, temperatures are expected to drop in the area as the storm moves in. Residents can take a few simple steps to prepare for power outages, severe weather or home fires. While the city monitors every storm and prepares accordingly, residents are encouraged to be prepared and monitor local weather forecasts.

Create a disaster supplies kit of basic items your family may need in case of an emergency, including flashlights, first aid supplies, and a battery-operated radio. Have supplies in both your home and car. Supplies for cars should include blankets, shovels and snow brushes. Drivers are reminded to clear off their entire cars, especially windows.
Create a disaster plan for your family that will help you stay connected during emergencies. If you have guests coming for the holidays, take time to review your plan with them. Don't use candles for lighting if the power goes out, use flashlights or glow sticks only. Do not use appliances such as stoves and ovens as alternative heating sources.
Use generators correctly. If you have a portable generator and the power goes out, plan to keep the generator outdoors. Never use it inside, including in the basement or garage. Do not hook a generator up directly to your home's wiring. The safest thing to do is to connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator.
Check smoke alarms. Make sure your alarms are working properly and replace batteries as necessary. This is especially important when cooking for the holidays.
Residents are encouraged to "adopt a fire hydrant." Clear an area in front of and around fire hydrants to allow fast access by Norwalk firefighters in the event of a fire in your neighborhood.
