NORWALK, Conn. -- He took everything — except the kitchen sink.

A tenant stole numerous items — including a toilet, a kitchen stove and kitchen drawers — when he moved out of a Van Zant Street home in Sept. 25, Norwalk police said.

On Tuesday, Humayaun Chowdhury, 50, of 6 Ambler Drive, turned himself in to police. He's charged with first-degree criminal damage to a landlord's property by a tenant and third-degree larceny.

The landlord of the condo wanted the tenant to move out but allowed him to live rent-free near the end of his stay, police said. On Sept. 24, the tenant called the landlord to say he had left but didn't have a key and left the door unlocked, police said.

The landlord checked the condo the next day and discovered a nearly empty — and damaged — apartment, police said.

In addition to the stove, drawers and toilet, drapes, the bathroom cabinet, faucets, lights, the shower head, drain, mirror, smoke detector, two ceiling fans and lights, electrical outlet covers and an air conditioner were also missing, police said.

Police made numerous attempts to contact Chowdhury beginning in late September until he agreed to turn himself in on Tuesday, police said.

His bond was set at $10,000, and he's scheduled to appear in court on March 20.

There was no information on whether any of the items were recovered.
