Look Out For Crossing Guards, Buses As School Resumes In Norwalk Wednesday

NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk students are going back to school on Wednesday, and police are going to be out in force to make sure that drivers behave safely around students, buses and crossing guards.

Crossing guards will be out in full force beginning Wednesday and continuing through the school year.

The Norwalk Police Department will be conducting Slow Down Days throughout the city over the next several weeks. Enforcement details will target speeding, passing stopped school buses and distracted driving in and around school zones. Police are also reminding drivers that crossing guards will be stationed throughout the city beginning Wednesday and for the remainder of the school year.

"Please be extra cautious for pedestrian traffic and always obey our school crossing guards," police said.

Crossing guards ensure that children arrive and leave school safely, and police will be monitoring school crossings to ensure that drivers are following crossing guards' directions.

Drivers are required to immediately stop at least 10 feet away from where a crossing guard is on duty, as soon as the crossing guard directs them to do so. Any car stopped for a crossing guard is not allowed to proceed until the crossing guard gives the okay. Drivers who violate this law will be fined $450 for the first offense, and subsequent offenses can result in fines of between $500 and $1,000, or up to 30 days in prison.
