Police have released the identities of both the man stabbed to death in Stamford and the man being questioned in the case.

Enrique Gutama, 53, of Stamford, was identified as the man found lying on a sidewalk around 10 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, at the intersection of Cove and Frederick streets, said Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin.

The suspect in the case, Alonzo Perez-Mateo, 30, also of Stamford, is being held on two prior warrants, including one in which he ran over a man with his vehicle, said Conklin.

"Both cases he is being held on are violent assaults," Conklin said.

The stabbing took place over a love triangle in which Gutama was having an affair with Perez-Mateos girlfriend, he added.

Police believe Perez-Mateo used scissors to stab Gutama in the stomach. He has not been charged in the murder of Gutama but is a person of interest.

Following the stabbing, Gutama stumbled outside and fell on the sidewalk where he was seen by others, who then called the police. Conklin said there was so much blood on the sidewalk that the fire department had to be called to hose down the area.

Perez Mateo is being held on $300,000 bond.
