Johan Cifuentes, of Greenwich, was arrested around 8:45 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, by Stamford Police after the theft of two guns from a vehicle owned by a city resident, said Capt. Richard Conklin.
The road to Cifuentes' arrest began around 7 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, when a city man called Stamford Police to report that two weapons -- an AR-15 with two 30-round magazines and a “tactical” 12-gauge Remington shotgun -- had been stolen from his vehicle that was parked on Linden Place, said Conklin.
The department immediately "threw" a lot of manpower at finding the guns due to firepower involved, said Conklin.
Investigators with the department's Narcotic and Organized Crime unit were quickly able to identify a dark-colored Jeep that may have been involved by looking at surveillance videos from the area, Conklin said.
The unit put out feelers, and learned that the guns were being offered for sale on the street, he added.
They also received a tip that the man selling was Cifuentes and officers were able to locate him in a vehicle near the intersection of Elm Street and Myrtle Avenue where he was taken into custody during a traffic stop.
The weapons were found inside the vehicle.
Cifuentes, a convicted felon, was charged with two counts of stealing a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon.
In addition, because he is a felon, he was also charged with illegally possessing an assault weapon, criminal possession of ammunition and illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine.
Cifuentes is being on a $200,000 court-appearance bond.
