Shirley Gertrude Bowers Loftus, 79, Norwalk Resident

NORWALK, Conn. -- Shirley Gertrude Bowers Loftus died March 22 in Norwalk, at the age of 79.

She is survived by her children, Cathy Loftus Strouse and Mark Loftus of Arizona; her grandson, Ronnie Saunchegrow of Illinois; her brothers Charles Bowers of Norwalk and Raymond Bowers of Colorado; and her cat, Friska. 

She was predeceased by her daughter Belinda Loftus Saunchegrow; parents Harold J. Bowers, Sr. and Gertrude Morehouse Bowers; brothers Arthur Bowers and Harold Bowers, Jr.; sister Clara Bowers Hoyt Egeressy; and partner, Michael Shanko. 

She was born Aug. 14, 1935, in Norwalk. She grew up on North Main Street in South Norwalk and attended Norwalk High School. 

She worked at Nash Engineering and was a nurse’s aide at different locations, including the Darien Convalescent Home.

She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of South Norwalk, singing in the choir since childhood. 

A memorial service in her honor will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at the East Avenue United Methodist Church, 244 East Ave., East Norwalk. The Reverend Ronell Howard will officiate. 

There will be a time for light refreshments after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
