Shel Wappler, 55, Of Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. -- Shel Wappler died at his home on Wednesday, Sept. 2. He was 55.

He was born March 5, 1960.

He taught fifth-grade at Columbus Magnet school for 10 years and later achieved a lifelong dream by becoming a certified merchant marine captain. 

One of his proudest achievements was sailing his ship Agnes from the coastal village of Gweek, in Cornwall, England, to the harbor in South Norwalk.

He is survived by wife, Karen Burns-Wappler; his children, Sam, Ivy and Will; parents, Reinhold and Jane Wappler; sisters, Sarah and Amy, and his brother, Peter; and in-laws, Carol and James Burns.. 

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Shore and Country Club, 220 Gregory Boulevard, East Norwalk.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Shel Wappler Scholarship Fund at Columbus Magnet School 48 Concord Place Norwalk, CT 06854.

The Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory is handling arrangements.
