NORWALK, Conn. – Matteo "Matt" DiGiacomo, a longtime Norwalk resident, died Nov. 11. He was 90.
A World War II veteran, he served as a medical officer. One of his proudest moments was witnessing his grandson’s entry into the Marine Corps, his family said.
DiGiacomo spent most of his 90 years in Norwalk. As a young boy, he was a caddy at Longshore Country Club in Westport. He walked or biked the 12-mile round trip from his home in South Norwalk to his caddy assignments.
He enjoyed family get-togethers in Fairfield for picnics or holidays. For most of his career, he was employed as an auto body worker. He took pride in his work and his ability to make a damaged car look better than new, his family said.
After the death of his wife, Rose, DiGiacomo moved to Newington, Conn., where he spent nine years. His great love was being outdoors and working in his yard. When he was no longer able to care for himself, he moved into his daughter’s home in Berlin, Conn.
DiGiacomo is survived by a daughter, Diane; a son-in-law, Stephen; and a grandson, Matthew.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Building Homes for Heroes, the USO or the Employer Services for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). He also was committed to FoodShare.
