Wind wasn't the only problem last night. So was water, flooding roads and carrying storm debris that blocked drains. But toppled trees remain the major problem. At noon, Perry Ave. was still blocked by several trees that had snagged power lines, leaving many homes in the dark since early Saturday afternoon. Cathy Conover, a Perry Ave. resident, said that her family spent the night at her mother-in-law's because she didn't want to get trapped if too many trees fell. This morning she returned to her home to see a cascade of three trees blocking her neighbor's driveway.
In Silvermine, the sharp buzz of chainsaws filled the air as residents began their own tree-removal projects. Damage wasn't limited to homes in wooded areas. Flying debris hit a West Ave. store, shattering the display window.
