Jerry Reyes, 23, who lived in New Rochelle at the time of the shooting, but now resides in Greenwich, was sentenced to three years of probation after pleading guilty in Westchester County Court to criminal possession of a weapon following a shootout with Yonkers police officer Kayla Mayer.
Shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, two officers, including Maher were dispatched to the area of Marshall Road, near Ridge Drive, following reports of a suspicious vehicle that was occupied by two suspects.
Upon arrival, officers found Reyes and Frank Valencia, 19, sitting in the parked car. As they approached, Valencia opened fire and struck Maher in the jaw, hospitalizing her.
Backup arrived, officers returned fire and the two men were taken into custody, with Valencia suffering an injury in the shootout. Maher survived the gunshot wound and was released from the hospital two days later.
Valencia was injured in the shootout and taken to Westchester Medical Center, where he was charged with attempted murder. Reyes didn’t fire a shot during the incident.
Valencia pleaded guilty in December last year to two counts of attempted aggravated murder of a police officer and one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was sentenced to 24 years to life in prison.
