Street paving should begin the end of next week. Hal Alvord, director of public works for Norwalk, expects contracts with Deering Construction Inc. to be signed in the next day or two. The work schedule would be finalized soon after. The asphalt plants opened April 5, said Alvord. So were a little behind schedule.
Part of the citys annual repaving work, the project became a priority after last winters harsh conditions left many streets dotted with pot holes. Norwalk expects to pave 36 streets this year. The budget for the project includes money for capital projects from the current fiscal year as well as $5 million from fiscal year 2010-11 that will become available July 1, the most the city has ever allocated for street paving.
Alvord said his department would coordinate the schedule with representatives from Deering. Streets near schools, for example, would be scheduled for later in the summer after school is out to minimize traffic interruptions. Other work would be scheduled in a manner that would make for the most efficient use of resources.
Portions of Gregory Boulevard, Bartlett Avenue and Wilson Avenue should all be repaved this summer. Other streets have been identified for repaving but the extent of the work will depend in part, Alvord said, on the cost of the asphalt. The price of asphalt is tied to the price of oil, of course, he said.
Starting next week, The Daily Norwalk expects to provide the paving schedule as it becomes available so readers can plan their routes and minimize inconvenience.
