I'm a good citizen. The city of Norwalk announced that Wednesday's trash pickup "would be accomplished," so I put our garbage cans out Tuesday night as close to the road as possible. I also took note on my 1 a.m. walk through the falling snow that many of my East Norwalk neighbors had not been so diligent. Maybe they assumed the trash wouldn't get picked up.
Turns out they were right. I'm not throwing stones at the hard-working city employees, I'm just saying the trash is still out there.
I'm not alone. Maribeth Darcy, who lives on Pequot Drive in East Norwalk, said her husband Matt put the trash out Tuesday night. It was covered in a thin layer of snow Wednesday morning when they looked out the window and watched the garbage truck drive right past. In their opinion, their garbage was in plain view.
Hal Alvord, director of the Department of Public Works, first expressed skepticism. "We have people every day who call and complain that their garbage and their recycling got missed, and they didn't have it out when they were supposed to," he said. When I told him that my trash had also been missed, he told me to call customer service.
I did, and the woman who answered put my name on a list.
If your trash pickup was missed due to the camouflaging effects of snow, call 203-854-3200 for City Hall and then push 4 for customer service. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
