Commuters at the South Norwalk train station confessed they were unsettled but resigned when they heard the Obama administration was cutting money used to fight terroism in the New York City transit system.
I feel uncomfortable about it but what choice do I have? asked Neil Son, who said he has to take the train. I feel (the transit police) are doing as good a job as they can but I never see a security presence.
The Department of Homeland Security announced yesterday they would reduce the money allocated to the transit system by 27 percent or $42 million.
Other commuters expressed confidence in the transit police but wondered about the improved technology the extra money could have provided. Im confident (NYC Police) Commissioner (Raymond) Kelly and his minions are doing everything in their power, said Kirk Tucker, standing with his brief case in hand. Unfortunately, this is just one of many cuts.
Sure, they are doing everything in their power, said Ruth Shay-Johnson, who was heading into New York City for a day of shopping. But I dont think we have ever gotten enough. Everybody in this country has forgotten about 9/11 except those of us in the tri-state area.
The report, which ran yesterday in the New York Post, said Homeland Security officials believe the New York area receives ample funding. Both Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Peter King disagreed and called for more money to be directed to the area.
Airman First Class Kevin Alexander, who was on vacation but traveling in uniform, said the news made him feel a little less comfortable traveling on the trains. While he expected the transit police are doing all they can to keep the trains safe, he admitted he always thinks about it. In training, they tell me to remain vigilant, especially in New York. People target the military and everybody targets New York.
