The Norwalk police have increased patrols in the Water street area, after repeated and unsolved burglaries. Today, they nabbed 46-year-old Melvin Todd Mariner, a Norwalk resident, for criminal trespass. Patrol officers found him, at 1:21 a.m., behind MAC Marine, 108 Water street. He allegedly told them that he was helping a friend fix a flat tire. The officers found no one else nearby, nor any car with a flat tire, and arrested Mariner on the spot.
A routine check of the criminal database found that Mariner was out on bond related to a September 9 arrest for second degree assault. His history shows 41 arrests since becoming an adult, a record that Lt. Paul Resnick called that of "a career criminal." Police are now looking into whether Mariner was involved in the string of break-ins that have frustrated business owners. They're examining forensic evidence taken at the site of each break-in and cross-checking it with evidence gathered last night.
Mariner was arraigned this morning and did not post the $2,500 bond. He's being held in the Bridgeport Correctional Center.
