NORWALK, Conn. Judy OBrien, 62, has died from injuries sustained during an early Tuesday morning fire at the Maple Street condominium complex near Norwalk Hospital. O'Brien lived there with her 92-year-old mother, Marjorie Johnson. Both were badly injured during the blaze.
A spokeswoman in the state's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington said Thursday morning an autopsy would be conducted Thursday to determine O'Brien's cause of death. The spokeswoman said her body is currently at the coroner's office.
O'Brien and her mother suffered burns and smoke inhalation after their condo at Sheffield Ridge Condominium complex, 45 Maple St., caught fire Tuesday at 4:19 a.m., according to Fire Department officials. Both mother and daughter were unconscious when firefighters arrived at their unit, Apt. 4C. Firefighters had to force their way in to rescue them, fire officials said.
The fire broke out suddenly at the four-story, 40-unit building, filling the fourth floor with heavy smoke and causing the building to be evacuated. About an hour after the fire was extinguished, tenants were allowed back into their units, fire officials said.
Fire Inspector Kirk McDonald is investigating the cause with the State Fire Marshal's Office.
