NORWALK, Conn. — A total of 11 people swam to safety on Shea Island after their boat sank in the waters of Long Island Sound off the coast of Norwalk late Saturday, police said.

The Marine Units from the Norwalk Police Department and Norwalk Fire Department responded at 8:09 p.m. to Shea Island for a report of a boat taking on water.

When officers arrived, the found that the 11 passengers had evacuated the boat and swam back to Shea Island, police said.

Facing rough conditions, Norwalk officers evacuated all 11 people off the island and transported them to the docks at Veterans Park. There, Norwalk Emergency Medical Service evaluated two children for exposure, police said.

The group had been camping on Shea Island and had returned to their boat, which suffered a mechanical issue, causing it to take on water, police said.
